Parents:
By joining the Donna Shepard Intermediate School Band, you and your child have made the decision to make music an integral part of your daily life. This is a substantial investment in time and money.
To help your child be successful:
Invest 5-10 minutes each day to hear your child play his/her songs, exercises and studies. Ask them to EXPLAIN what they are doing. If they cannot explain what they are doing and perform for you, then they are probably not understanding what we are doing and will need some help and encouragement from you.
NOTICE! PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
Please do not let your child get behind in his musical studies! If a child gets behind, it is very difficult for him to catch-up! Success is simply a matter of making band a daily part of your child's life, mastering small sets of material on a daily basis. When the work is done daily in small "bites," success will easily follow. |
You do not have to be "musically trained" to tell if your child is succeeding. If it looks like a duck, smells like a duck and quacks like a duck, it probably is a duck! You will find this time of interaction between you and your child to be very rewarding.
Until your child establishes a routine of practicing, instrument maintenance and transporting materials, please remind her and help her get all this organized. If your child is not in the habit of carrying a whole bunch of "stuff" to a whole lot of places each day (soccer, piano, choir, church, dance, cheerleading, softball, chess club etc etc etc!!), she may need a lot of reminding (maybe "nagging!!")
Finally, there are many opportunities for parents to be involved in band activities from now through high school. We will need:
- chaperones/sponsors for every trip and concert
- help setting-up chairs and stands for every concert and event
- help moving all that percussion equipment!
- a public relations person for news releases
- video and photography experts
- general secretarial assistance
Information will be sent home with your child regarding parental help for concerts, trips and extra activities.

We are firmly convinced that Donna Shepard Intermediate School will provide your child with THE BEST education possible in all areas! We have GREAT kids and we are excited about the level of performance we will be able to reach this year!
