MISD SOLO and ENSEMBLE CONTEST PROCEDURES

Performance Time________Performance Room_________Judge ______

You may enter up to 3 events. The first MUST be your "classical" solo. The second and third may be a "fun" solo or an ensemble.

Each event that you enter is $5. (If you have a financial difficulty, see Mr. Hood or Mr. Julian.) You may use your CD to accompany you, or may use a "live" piano accompanist which will cost $10.

One Week Before Contest:

  1. Be sure you can play your solo/ensemble perfectly with the metronome.

  2. Have TWO copies of your music: one for you and one for the judge.

  3. Number all measures on both copies of your music

The Day Before Contest:

  1. Have your acct. CD ready in a safe location (if you’re using one)

  2. Be sure your instrument, music and equipment goes home with you after school!

  3. Be sure your equipment is in perfect working condition.

On Contest Day:

  1. Warm-up at home for a few minutes and play through your solo once or twice.

  2. Dress your best! (No T-shirts, no jeans, no sneakers. This is an important performance!)

  3. Leave everything at home that you do not need.

  4. Arrive at MARY ORR INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL at least 20 minutes before your performance time.

  5. Find the warm-up area (usually the cafeteria). You may leave your case there while you play ONLY if someone is there to watch it. DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING UNATTENDED. It will be gone when you return.

  6. Find your performance room, and then go back to the warm-up room.

  7. Warm-up as we do in class. Play through your solo once.

  8. Remember to BREATHE.

  9. Ten minutes before your scheduled performance time, take everything you need to perform, go to your performance room and check in with the monitor. The monitor is the person outside the room running the schedule. Smile and tell them your name and performance time. They may be ready for you to play immediately or you may have to wait. Whatever they say, SMILE and say "Thank you!"

  10. The monitor will tell you when you will perform, now or a little later. If your room is running behind schedule, you may have to wait 10-15 minutes. THAT’S OK. Do not panic. This is normal. Just relax and wait.

  11. The monitor may take your music to the judge along with your rating sheet, OR the monitor may ask you to give these to the judge. Either way is fine.

  12. Introduce yourself to your judge: "Hi! My name is ________." Smile!

  13. Get your acct. read to go. Tune to the piano if you are using a "live" acct.

  14. Play a short warm-up pattern. The first note of your solo or part of a Remington is fine.

  15. Start your solo/ensemble as you always do and play beautifully!

  16. When complete, wait for the judge’s response. The judge may say "thank you" and then you gather your things and exit, or the judge may want to talk to you. Either way, be polite or smile. NEVER do anything rude or goofy. We want to be known as the school with "THE BEST KIDS" in every way!

  17. Take your things back to the wam-up room, pack-up and prepare for your next event or go enjoy the rest of your day. You may want to wait for your rating to be posted in the warm-up room.

MEDALS will be awarded on Monday during class!
